I have compiled the following list of claims of the healing and cosmetic uses of coconut oil from many sources, including direct testimonials from people I know. Since I am not a doctor, I cannot attest to the veracity of these claims, but what I can say is that I have used all-natural or unprocessed virgin coconut oil (VCO) for my own cosmetic regimen, and that I have been very happy with the results.
HEALING
Bruises, scrapes, cuts, bug bites, rashes – applied directly to the wound,
coconut oil protects it from getting infected by dust, bacteria and virus; it also
helps reduce swelling, redness, permanent scars, and itching.
Dry or cracked nipples
– apply directly in between feedings; safe for baby to ingest.
Skin conditions like dermatitis, eczema and psoriasis – apply directly for relief; aids in healing.
FACE
Eye cream – dab under
the eyes to reduce puffiness, eye bags and wrinkles.
Makeup remover –
place a small amount on a cotton pad or ball and use to gently remove makeup.
Moisturizer – an
effective and inexpensive alternative to store-bought moisturizers that are
processed with chemicals.
SKIN
Age spots, or “liver” spots – apply directly to the spots to help them fade.
Body lotion/hand cream
– an all-natural moisturizer for the whole body.
Body scrub/exfoliator
– mix with table sugar or fine sea salt into a paste and rub on skin and rinse
off for softer skin; add your favorite essential oil (e.g., lavender) for a nice
smell.
Dry lips – coconut
oil is more effective than the Chapsticks available at stores.
Pre- and after-shave
– apply before and after shaving; soothes the skin without clogging pores.
Stretch marks – nourishes
damaged skin and helps reduce the marks.
Wrinkles – aids in
reducing or even preventing skin wrinkles.
HAIR
Baldness – apply
three times a day to affected area of hair loss. Coconut oil supports cell
regeneration.
Dandruff – aids in
dandruff control.
Deep hair-conditioning
– apply liberally to hair and leave on for a few hours (or overnight, but
protect your bed linen by wearing a cap) before shampooing for silky and shiny
hair; conditions the scalp as well.
Dry scalp – rub
directly onto scalp to reduce or prevent dry, itchy scalp; safe for babies too.
Shampoo and Conditioner – there are now shampoo and conditioner products in the market made
with coconut oil.
OTHER USES
Lubricant – a
safe, non-chemical personal lubricant.
Massage oil – reap
the moisturizing benefits of coconut oil by using it for your massages.
Toothpaste – mix
with baking soda into a paste and use for brushing your teeth.
